These seminars will be scheduled depending on student interest and are open to students in both sessions.
Cuisines of China: Taste the Differences
Students will learn about the different cuisines of China: their basic characteristics, basic ingredients and dishes, and relationship between the dishes and the geographic areas where they originated. Then students will find restaurants specializing in these cuisines, sample their food, and choose menus for the entire program to enjoy and comment on. Learning about the cuisines and doing lots of tasting will be the focus for this seminar.
Chinese Thought: Confucius and the Daoists
What does a close reading of the basic Confucian and Daoist texts reveal? What are the key teachings of Confucius and the Daoists? How were these teachings changed over time? What is the current state of the Ħ§Confucian Tradition,Ħ¨ and how do these ancient schools of thought affect the Chinese today? These are questions that this informal seminar will address.
Traditional Chinese Medicine: Philosophy and Practice
Doctors of traditional Chinese medicine will discuss and provide examples of the differences between Western and traditional Chinese medicine. Interested students will visit a traditional Chinese medicine hospital and have a chance to experience acupuncture.
